The results of a feasibility study carried out to establish a new large waste collection site and ReUse centre in Mažeikiai, Lithuania were revealed. The study has been carried out under the Circular Based Waste Management project funded by EEA and Norway grants.
The results indicate the optimal location for construction of the centre where residents will be able to bring in items they no longer need and exchange them for more useful items. Furthermore, the centre will offer repair services and host educational sessions for residents on the benefits of repairing and reusing items.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Mažeikiai District Municipality including Mayor Vidmantas Macevičius and Advisor to the Mayor Virgilijus Radvilas, the Telšiai Region Waste Management Centre, Green Business Norway and Hidroterra UAB.
During the meeting, the priorities for design preparation were agreed upon, and the importance of the circular economy in waste management was emphasized. The future perspectives, organizational and technological principles of the centre’s activities, and the renewal and return of unusable items to the market were also discussed. Additionally, the possibility of another project, a new industrial park based on circular economy priorities, was brought up and discussed.
The previous day, Green Business Norway also had a work meeting at the Telšiai Region Waste Management centre, where the current waste management operations, use of secondary raw materials, and future plans were reviewed.
While in Mažeikiai Thor Sverre Minnesjord took part in Entrepreneurship Day, an event where students from the local gymnasiums presented their business ideas they developed while taking part in the Accelerator 2022 programme. The programme was designed to give students the opportunity to experience the basics of creating a business while in school.
At the event, Thor Sverre Minnesjord shared his experiences and lessons learned throughout his 25-year journey as an independent consultant and the founding of Green Business Norway and the establishment of the accelerator program for startups.
Project partner from Mažeikiai District Municipality Mr. Virgilijus Radvilas offered an award to the best sustainability project. The award was given to EKA which demonstrated the feasibility of recycling paper for both household and educational purposes.
The Circular Based Waste Management project is funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Regional Cooperation.
